Cork Migrant Centre Youth Initiative Against Racism (CMC YIAR), under the umbrella of the Cork Migrant Centre (CMC) was formed as a response to the killing of George Floyd in 2020, which fuelled the Black Lives Matter (BLM), bringing this movement to Ireland, and to the young people that use the services of the CMC. In collaboration with CYPSC, CMC YIAR responded by giving young people a platform in the form of a webinar to process emotions and to start a conversation in Ireland. In a truly innovative webinar held in June, 2020, the young CMC YIARs (age 13- 18 and their mentors) engaged frontline service provided including senior politicians, leaders of statutory and other organizations.
Most important the young people pledged to be part of looking for solutions towards positive change. A huge part of narrated lived experiences of racial discrimination during the webinar happened in schools as a response to this the CMC YIAR was formed. In order to address the raised issues, the group divided into three sub-groups: Anti-racist training subgroup; Mentoring subgroup and Policy – Interagency Subgroup in collaboration with CYPSC.
