CMC Youth Initiative Against Racism Webinar

CMC Youth Initiative Against Racism Webinar: Cork Migrant Centre Youth Initiative Against Racism (CMC YIAR) was formed as a response to the killing of George Floyd in 2020, which fuelled the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement across the globe, bringing civil rights movement to Ireland, and no doubt to the young people that use the services of the Cork Migrant Centre.  In collaboration with CYPSC, CMC YIAR responded by giving them a platform in the form of a webinar to process their emotions and to start a conversation in Ireland. The youth processed their emotions relating to the killing of George Floyd through Artwork. In addition,  in a truly innovative webinar held in June, 2020, the young CMC YIARs engaged senior politicians, leaders of statutory and other organizations among them: CEO of TUSLA; Senior members of An Garda Siochana; the Ombudsman for children; President of Cork Chamber of Commerce; President of Irish Primary Schools Principals Network; Lord Mayor of Cork City and the Lord Mayor of Cork County Council among other distinguished panellists. The young people presented their many heartfelt experiences of racism and discrimination. They tasked the leaders present to pledge to take actions to provide solutions BUT most important they pledged to be part of that solution. A huge part of narrated lived experiences of racial discriminition during the Webinar happened in schools and that was the rationale for this project.
